Nature-Inspired Leadership: How nature facilitation can lead to clarity and solutions for organisational resilience

Having worked in the not-for-profit sector since the early 2000s, I’ve seen significant changes in the way organisations think about sustainability, income generation and resilience.

With a background in fundraising and business development this matters to me.

The challenge is no longer simply about building a sustainable income model.

For-purpose organisations now need to navigate uncertainty, respond to increased disruption and continue creating impact when circumstances change.

I’ve become increasingly interested in what this means for leadership.

In my own life, I have developed a personal practice for navigating complex decisions and uncertainty. Time and again, I’ve found that when I pause and connect more deeply with nature, I gain greater clarity.

This connection between nature, leadership and resilience has led to our new workshop at Acacia Tree Fundraising for organisations in Australia and New Zealand: Nature-Inspired Leadership for Organisational Resilience.

Drawing on my experience in the charity sector alongside principles from nature-based practice and nature facilitation, the workshop offers a different and creative way of thinking about how we lead through complexity and change.

Rethinking organisational resilience

Organisational resilience is often discussed in operational or financial terms: cash flow, risk management, workforce planning, diversification of income and business continuity.

These things matter. But they only tell part of the story.

Resilient organisations are not simply efficient organisations. They are adaptive organisations.

They can:

  • respond to disruption without losing sight of their purpose

  • make thoughtful decisions under pressure

  • support their people through uncertainty

  • adapt when circumstances change

  • continue creating impact despite challenging conditions

At its core, organisational resilience is about how an organisation responds when conditions are less than ideal.

And that response is shaped by leadership.

For leaders in the for-purpose sector, this means developing the capacity to hold complexity without becoming overwhelmed by it. It means being able to pause, recognise what is happening, consider different perspectives and respond rather than simply react.

How nature can support us to be better leaders

Nature offers a powerful, practical lens for understanding resilience.

Living systems have evolved over time to adapt, regenerate, and thrive in changing conditions. They do not rely on rigid control. Instead, they balance structure with flexibility, stability with responsiveness.

A nature-inspired leadership approach draws on these principles to support leaders to:

  • stay grounded and regulated under pressure

  • recognise patterns rather than react to isolated events

  • make decisions with greater clarity in complex environments

  • support systems (teams, organisations) to adapt rather than resist change

This is not about abstract theory. It is about applying observable, practical principles from living systems to real organisational challenges.

Personally, I find that when I pay attention to the animals and plants in my local environment, there can be a flash of inspiration or a reminder that patience is required for things to unfold or bloom in their own time. It helps me to trust the process, and make decisions with confidence.

However, the value of nature-inspired leadership isn't simply in finding interesting metaphors in the natural world.

The real value comes from translating those insights into practical leadership and organisational practice.

It can also support the leader themselves. Because organisational resilience and leadership resilience are closely connected.

Resilient leadership isn't about pushing through

The word resilience can sometimes imply the ability to keep going regardless of circumstances.

But for leaders working in complex environments, resilience isn't necessarily about pushing harder or simply coping with more. It can be about maintaining enough clarity, steadiness and perspective to make good decisions when there is no obvious answer.

This is one of the reasons I find nature-based approaches so valuable.

Creating space to slow down, observe and reconnect with a wider perspective can change the way we see a challenge. Sometimes the most useful leadership response isn't another strategy or another action. It is taking enough time to understand what is actually happening.

A different approach to leadership development

Leadership development in the for-purpose sector often focuses on important practical skills: strategy, communication, governance, fundraising, financial management and team leadership.

These skills are essential.

But they are most effective when leaders also have the capacity to navigate uncertainty, complexity and change.

Nature-inspired leadership offers a complementary pathway.

Through nature facilitation and nature-based learning, leaders can explore both the practical and human dimensions of leadership. It creates space to step away from the immediate demands of organisational life, reflect differently and consider challenges from a wider perspective.

Nature-inspired leadership for organisational resilience

Our live, facilitated online workshop is designed for purpose-driven leaders navigating uncertainty and change.

The workshop explores how insights from nature and nature facilitation can be applied to real leadership and organisational challenges — helping participants step back, think differently and explore practical approaches to building resilience.

What this workshop can support you with:

  • frameworks for understanding complexity and systems

  • new perspectives on decision-making

  • opportunities to step back from immediate pressures

  • ways of recognising patterns and relationships

  • prompts for longer-term and more sustainable thinking

  • language and metaphors that make complex challenges easier to explore

This workshop is for you, if you are looking for a new and creative way to deep dive into a complex problem facing your team or organisation at this time, and a willingness to approach it differently, and be open to what unfolds, when our inherent relationship to the natural world is used to generate new insights.

If you would like to explore the workshop for yourself, your leadership team or your organisation, you can find out more about Nature-Inspired Leadership for Organisational Resilience.
